Shaune Kamhungira is a Zimbabwean filmmaker with a passion for telling stories that explore themes of identity, migration, and cultural heritage. Having lived and worked in South Africa, Shaune brings a unique cross-cultural perspective to his projects, using his own experiences of
migration and belonging to inform his storytelling.
His latest documentary, Through Time’s Embrace: 370 Years of Chinese South Africans, is an exploration of the rich history and identity of the Chinese South African community. The film traces their journey from the first arrivals in the 17th century to their enduring presence in modern South Africa. Through interviews, archival footage, and a poetic narrative, the documentary delves into the complexities of cultural integration and identity over 370 years.
Shaune’s background as a Zimbabwean filmmaker allows him to approach the story with a fresh perspective, drawing parallels between the histories of African communities and their shared struggles for belonging and identity.
